Actor-turned-director Prakash Raj has finally released Tadka: Love Is Cooking, the official Hindi remake of the 2011 Malayalam hit Salt N’ Pepper, on an OTT platform. The movie has previously been remade in other Indian languages with different titles, such as Un Samayal Arayil in Tamil, Ulavacharu Biryani in Telugu, and Oggarane in Kannada. The film’s theme revolves around food, and in this version, “Aloo paratha” plays a significant role in connecting the two lead characters, Tuki and Madhura, who are an archaeologist and a RJ, respectively. It’s a unique and refreshing story about two individuals who meet much later in life and share a love for food and a belief that they are too old to fall in love.

The movie’s writers Dillesh K Nair and Shyam Pushkaran, who also co-wrote the original film, created a unique story where food plays a significant role as a character in the film. At first, the blend of an old-fashioned romance with natural comedy makes the film quite appealing, but it eventually loses its momentum, and the situations become dull. The plot is predictable as it follows a common theme seen in numerous Bollywood films where a war of words between two people eventually leads to developing feelings for each other. However, what sets this story apart is the lead couple’s shared passion for cooking and enjoying good food, which strengthens their relationship.
Ali Fazal, who plays Tuki’s nephew Siddharth, and Tapsee Pannu, who plays Madhura’s only friend Nicole, deliver strong performances, but their characters feel stereotypical. Additionally, Pannu’s dubbed voice is jarring and detracts from her performance. The story’s twists and turns are also predictable, and while the rest of the cast, including Murali Sharma, Lillete Dubey, Naveen Kaushik, and Rajesh Sharma, do their parts justice, the overall result is a bland combination of food and love that fails to captivate.

The film’s climax does bring the lead couple together, shedding their complexities and convincing the audience that it is never too late to find true love. However, a more engaging love story would have made this 115-minute drama more charming to watch.
